DADELDHURA, Dec 10 2006 (IPS) – While women in the capital Kathmandu fight for representation on the political bodies designing the new Nepal , in the remote western region Bhakti Oli has just claimed her right to health care after more than 35 years.
It was after her third child was born at her home in Ganeshpur village that Oli suffered a uterine prolapse. Everything came out, she says at a mobile health camp where she has finally sought treatment. Everybody knew it but there was no hospital so I put it back in myself.

BANGKOK, Jan 29 2007 (IPS) – International health experts are warning Burma s neighbours that they face more threats from the spread of HIV along the porous borders that they share with the military-ruled country.
The record number of HIV cases in two of India s north-eastern provinces that have Burma as a neighbour offers a troubling sign of what lies ahead, says Dr. Tom Lee, co-director of the Global Health Access Programme (GHAP), based in Los Angeles. Nagaland and Manipur are two states with the highest HIV prevalence rates in India. It is eight percent among women tested at clinics along the border, while it is normally 1 to 2 percent across the rest of the area.

SANTO DOMINGO, Feb 21 2007 (IPS) – Lack of vitamin A is associated with the deaths of 350 people a year in the Dominican Republic, where some 400 babies are born annually with brain and spinal cord defects caused by folic acid deficiency, according to official statistics. In addition, many women are at risk of serious complications during childbirth due to iron deficiency anaemia.
On Feb. 15 the Public Health Ministry, with the cooperation of international organisations, launched a national food fortification programme aimed at dramatically reducing the rates of iron and vitamin A deficiency in women and children.

BUDAPEST, Apr 2 2007 (IPS) – Hungary s plans to host a NATO radar are being met with stiff resistance by locals who cite health and environmental fears. But their municipal representatives are seemingly yielding to government pressure.
The radar station is to be built in Southern Transdanubia, on a site called Tübes Hill.

The radar would be integrated into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) early warning defence system. NATO officially says it is indifferent to the exact location, as long as Hungary fulfils its obligations as a member state.

Citizen groups are warning that the radar and the radiation it produces will endanger nearby natural habitats, human health and the water supply, and hurt tourism.

One of the hardest goals for us to fulfil is to reduce maternal mortality (by two-thirds), the under-secretary of the planning and programming secretariat of the Guatemalan president s office (SEGEPLAN), María Castro, said at a forum organised by Fundación Solar and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Guatemala City.
